Funeral services for Yvonne Jones Stokes 84, of Denmark, SC, will be held at three o’clock p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Bethel Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Rudy Gwantly officiating; burial will be in the Denmark Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2pm until the time of the service on Sunday in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be given to Bethel Park United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 205, Denmark, SC 29042. Yvonne passed away at home on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
Born in Galivants Ferry, SC she was a daughter of the late Jacob Rowell Jones and Bessie Marie Jordan Jones and was married to James Fleetwood Stokes, Sr. for 58 ½ years before his passing in November of 2018. Yvonne met Fleetwood on a blind date and they united in marriage within a year. She went to work for First National Bank in 1963 and retired in December of 2001 as Loan Officer and Branch Manager. She was a member of Bethel Park United Methodist Church where she served as a children’s Sunday school teacher for 25 years, and was church treasurer for 18 years. She also served as United Methodist Womans secretary and treasurer and was president for 3 terms. She received the United Woman of the year from Bethel Park for working and coordinating outreach with Nancy Brunson including Grace, foster children and Salk lunches. She enjoyed cooking for the Wednesday night bible study and was a delegate to the annual conference member finance committee. Mrs. Stokes was a member of the Bamberg County Easter Seals and the Bamberg County Heart Association where she served as treasurer for both. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, enjoyed playing bridge, reading, sewing, gardening and helping people by driving them to their Dr.’s appointments.
She is survived by her children, J. Fleetwood (Dana) Stokes, Jr. of Denmark, SC, Lisa S. (Keith) Scott of Morganton, NC and Holly S. (Mike) Hutto of Williston, SC; her grandchildren, Fleetwood (Brittany) Stokes, Bethany (Dillon) Sandifer, Taylor Stokes; Michael (Lucy) Scott, Virginia Scott, James Ross Scott and Katie Hutto; a sister Della Jones Kirkland of Batesburg; and a number of in-laws, nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceeded in death by 6 sisters, Marie Thompkins, Bethany James, Trudy Case Shockly, Elnita Smith, Ruth Daniel and Nancy Roberts; 4 brothers, James Thomas Jones, Jacob Rowell Jones, Jr., William Stephen Jones and baby Emerson Ford Jones.
