Virginia Greene Obituary

Virginia Shuler Greene, 92, died Sunday, September 19, 2021. Born in Williston, SC, she was the second daughter of William Fairey Shuler and Annie Cornelia Kizer Shuler of Williston, SC. A graduate of Williston-Elko High School, Winthrop College, and Vanderbilt University’s Dietetics residency program, Virginia was a Registered Dietitian (RD), and member of the American Dietetics Association. She began her professional career as a RD at the Columbia Hospital in 1951. Excepting a short stint when she taught at the Williston-Elko High School, the remainder of her professional career was as Chief Dietitian at various hospitals and SC State Agencies - Columbia Hospital, Memorial Hospital (Savannah, GA), SC Department of Mental Health State Hospital, SC Department of Corrections, and SC Department of Youth Services (Juvenile Justice). She was also a consulting dietitian at several Midlands area nursing homes and hospitals. A loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, a long-time member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, she enjoyed spending time with family, helping at the church, and helping others in any way she could.

Surviving are her son, Charles Michael (Deane Louise) Greene, Jr of Leesville, SC; her grandson, Matthew R. Michael, and several nieces and nephews. Debbie Webster Baxter of Oklahoma City, OK was especially close to her “Aunt Virginia”. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband of 68 years, Charles Michael “Charlie” Greene, and her sister Annie Rebecca Shuler Cox.

The family will be forever grateful for all the many wonderful caregivers from Sheppard’s Helping Hands (Batesburg-Leesville, SC) who assisted with at-home care. Each in her own way, these dedicated professionals contributed daily to Virginia’s care and enjoyment of life in her later years. Their support was truly a blessing to Virginia and her family. Additionally the family would like to say a special thanks to the many fine doctors, nurses, and staff at Lexington Medical Center and its’ physician practices for all the care provided in her later years (especially to LMC Heart & Vascular Center, and  to the in-house team of COVID doctors, nurses, and staff who have worked tirelessly to help her (and many others) survive this pandemic), and also to the compassionate and caring healthcare team at the Columbia Arthritis Center.

A private graveside service will be held at the Williston Cemetery in Williston, SC. Memorials may be sent to the Williston Cemetery Fund, PO Box 367, Williston, SC 29853 or to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Dr., Columbia, SC 29209. The family is extremely grateful for the assistance of Folk Funeral Home of Williston, SC with the arrangements.
