A Celebration of Life Service will be held at two o’clock p.m., Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Colston Branch Baptist Church, Bamberg, SC with the Reverend Shawn Hanks officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Colston Branch Baptist Church, 655 Sunday School Rd., Bamberg, SC 29003. Sylvia passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023.
Born in Shorncliffe, Kent, England, she was a daughter of the late Harold Whirton and Zena Grunberg Whirton and was married to the late Gene Turner Johnson. Gene affectionately referred to Sylvia as “the boo”. She was a member of Colston Branch Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She loved to shop and travel and had a great love for animals. Sylvia had a great personality and loved to “joke around” with her family and friends. Her friendship will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen (David) Merritt of Sandy Run, SC, Samantha (Westley L.) Driggers of Bamberg, SC, and Michelle (Robert) Cox of Las Vegas, NV; siblings, John (Zel) Whirton, Esther (Arthur) Bolton, and Daniel (Phillip) Whirton; 6 grandchildren, Haley (Bryan) Shuler, David (Santana) Merritt, Jr, Steven (Dawn) Driggers, Robert (Lian) Cox, Jr., Chelseé (Travis) Loadholt, and Tiffany Cox and her fiancé, William; 12 great grandchildren, Braley, Benjamin, Wylder, Luke, Caylee, Lily, Paislee, Joey, Caden, Mikey, Isabella, and Lilly.
