Shirley (Sizemore) Rutland

Shirley Sizemore Rutland, 80, wife of the late James Carlton Rutland, passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by family on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Born in Aiken, SC, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Juanita Widener Sizemore and grew up in New Ellenton, SC. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Shirley was an avid Braves and Clemson fan. She enjoyed fishing and being outdoors with her grandchildren and anything that included her family, especially July 4th festivities. Shirley retired from Aiken County School District after 23 years of service with special needs children, all who she loved as her own.

Survivors include her sons, Darrin Rutland (Crystal) of Cleveland, TN and Gary Rutland (Sarah) of Ridge Spring, SC; grandchildren, Grant, Tripp, Emily, and Morgan; a sister, Joyce Engle (Tom) of Vero Beach, FL; a brother, Willie Sizemore (Rebecca) of New Ellenton, SC; and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. In listing survivors, the family would like to recognize the Hall family and the Pritchett family for their lifelong friendship and companionship to James and Shirley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, James Carlton Rutland; a sister, Mildred Sizemore Stone; a brother, Clyde Sizemore; sister-in-law, Cynthia Thompson Sizemore, and brother-in-law, Charles Stone.

Funeral Services will be held eleven o’clock a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1186 Mt. Calvary Road, Johnston, SC 29832 with the Reverends Paul Babb and Mark Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org.
