The family will receive friends before the service in the church sanctuary from 2-4 p.m. Shirley passed away at Barclay House of Aiken surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Shirley Boyles Flynn was born in Philippi, West Virginia, on December 1, 1940, and was welcomed into the world by her parents, Morgan Daniel Boyles and Beatrice Lake Boyles. She moved to Williston in middle school and graduated from Williston-Elko High School. She also received an associate’s degree in secretarial science.
In 1959, she began a long and rewarding career at Savannah River Site. She retired in 1996 as Principle HR Rep. On November 26, 1960, Shirley married her high school sweetheart, A.W. “Bebo” Flynn. They had two daughters that blessed them with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of Williston Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities over the years including organist, choir member, and youth director.
Shirley had an immense love for music and spent much of her time sharing her talents with the community through piano, autoharp, organ, and voice. Two of her most well-loved endeavors were the vocal groups, The Blendettes and Friend Song. Upon retirement, Shirley, lovingly known as “Bema,” spent many hours doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed time at Edisto Beach looking for shark teeth, sewing her daughters’ dance costumes, decorating for special occasions, and cooking… especially the family favorite of West Virginia buckwheat cakes on Christmas morning.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Kelly Flynn, her brothers, Robert and Danny Boyles, and her sisters, Jo Criss, and Dora Everson.
She is survived by her daughter, Kia (Scott) Valentine, grandchildren, Mary Scott Valentine, Zac (Virginia) Neville, Anna Valentine, Flynn Valentine, and Tucker (Hannah) Neville, great-grandchildren, Eli Roberts, Reagan Stephens, Alice Neville, Maggie Neville, and Nash Neville (soon to arrive), along with many nieces and nephews.
