Ruth Young Obituary

Ruth was born on January 1st, 1937, in Williston, SC to her parents Ralph and Nellie Porter Bolen.  She married Carlton Schumpert, in 1954.  They shared two beautiful children, Cindy and Mark.  Ruth worked many jobs in her life, including working at her and Carlton's restaurant and country store, Bolen’s Groceries, Chill Chest, the Williston Telephone Company, and Williston Family Practice.  After high school, Ruth went on to earn a degree in secretarial work. Ruth has always been a member of Edisto Baptist Church and was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Ruth married Neal Young in 1982.  She helped do the bookwork for his Masonry business until he retired.  Ruth and Neal raised his granddaughter, Crystal Jackson and then also raised his great-grandson, Stephen Jackson.  She always loved everyone’s children and enjoyed taking care of them.

Ruth was a beautiful woman inside and out.  She had the most caring heart and loved people.  Ruth loved to dress up.  She always had her hair, nails, and make-up done, and loved to go shopping.  Ruth loved her family more than anything, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was involved with everything in their lives since their birth.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately call her Momma Ruth.  That started with the first grandchild, Kimberly and continued with Carl, Cameron, Isabelle, Isaiah, and Stephen.  She was also called Momma Ruth by many others, young and old alike. By far, her most favorite job ever, was taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She would rock those babies and sing “You are my Sunshine” and “Amazing Grace”, which is one of their favorite memories of her.  She enjoyed going on vacations with her daughter and family.  They took many vacations through the years.  Momma Ruth always wanted to be with her family and would have carried us all around in her pocket if she had it her way.

Ruth passed away on August 8, 2024, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family and friends. She will be missed so very much and our lives here on earth will never be the same.  We do know that she is watching over us and will be waiting in Heaven for each of us when we get there, with her arms wide open as we run as fast as we can into her sweet embrace.

Survivors include her loving daughter Cindy Schumpert Terry (Eddie); her son Mark Schumpert (Elizabeth); grand-children Kimberly Terry Norton (Anthony), Carl Schumpert, and Cameron Schumpert; great-grandchildren Isabelle and Isaiah Norton, and Stephen O’Neal Jackson; sister in-laws Rivie Bolen and Barbara Ann Young, and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Nellie Porter Bolen; brothers, Lothell and Marvin Bolen, dear sister and her best friend Dot Bolen Cathey, infant brother and sister, Morris and Virginia Bolen; sister in-law Nellie Bolen; the daddy of her children Carlton Schumpert, and husband O’Neal Young.
