Reverend Charlie Monroe Bowen, 94, of Elko, SC passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Funeral services will be held at three o’clock p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Elko Baptist Church with the Reverends Tom Baker and Mark Dickinson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to Elko Baptist Church, P.O. Box 277, Elko, SC 29826. Born in Liberty, SC, he was the son of the late Hamilton Walker Bowen and Lorena Christine Fletcher Bowen. Charlie was a graduate of Furman University and attended New Orleans Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Alta, pastored many churches throughout South Carolina including Camden, Walterboro, Lake City, and St. George. In 1971, they moved to Elko and ministered at Elko Baptist Church for a total of 40 years. He served as minister for 23 years and after his retirement he was Minister of Music for an additional 17 years. Charlie and his family were all very musically inclined and were always willing to sing whether it be in church or other social settings. He also enjoyed playing the fiddle, guitar and his kazoo. Charlie was quite a humorist, with a quick wit and loved telling jokes. He was very involved in the community, having previously served as a volunteer fireman, president of the Williston Lions Club, and an actor in several community plays and many church skits. Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Alta Mae Davis Bowen; daughters, Sharon Courtney of Rock Hill and Elaine (Mark) Dickinson of Hartsville; a sister, Mary Lou Madden of Liberty; grandchildren, Nathan (Rheanna), Jeremy, Rachel (Jake), Elise (Phillip) and Anna (Mike) and great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Joseph, Joshua, and Leah.
