Raymond Archie Hughes, 76, of Barnwell, SC, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026 at the VA Medical Center, Tuscaloosa, AL.
He was a Vietnam war veteran who spent his last years at the Tuscaloosa VA Geriatric Extended Care (GEC) Facility where he received exemplary care by the medical staff at Grace Hall.
He was born December 14th, 1949 in Newberry, SC to the late Mead Hammond and Sarah Gladys Bobb Hughes. He was a member of Barnwell First Baptist Church, a graduate of BHS and an honor graduate of Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College. Raymond was an avid horseman who enjoyed riding, grooming and caring for horses. His career span included working in the utility and auto industries.
Survivors include his sisters, Sybil (Ronnie) Horton, Alsa Sanders, Debra (Carlton) Lemmond all of Barnwell and Lena Kerby of Athens, Alabama; nieces and nephews include David Connor, Casey Horton, Joni Dial, Lisa Collins, Erik Lemmond, Shaw Lemmond and Kristy McKinney. He was preceded in death by his sister, Velvie Connor, brother, Glenn Hughes, niece, Karli Deloache, and nephew, Stephen Still.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 24th, 11:00 am at Barnwell Methodist Cemetery with Dr T. Bart Kelley of First Baptist Church officiating. Memorials may be made to Barnwell Methodist Cemetery PO Box 126 Barnwell, SC.
