Ralph Ruben Grainger, 84, 0f Allendale, SC passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 1, 2023.
Born in Screven, Wayne County Georgia to the late Galbert Lewis Grainger and Irene Morgan Grainger. Ralph was married to Georgia Kinard Grainger for 30 years prior to her death. He served the South Carolina National Guard, Retired from SCDOT as a Maintenance Foreman for Barnwell County after 32 years. Ralph also worked as a guard with Sizemore Security at the now Achroma Site. He was a member of Mt. Arnon Baptist Church for 65 years and a member of the Allendale Masonic Lodge #109 for 54 years.
Ralph grew up in Coosawhatchie before moving to Fairfax and then Allendale. He would brag to unsuspecting folks that he lived in the jail for years. Then, he would laugh and say “My mother was the jailor”. He was a great conversationalist and troubadour and would love to catch you off guard. Ralph loved his farm and the Appleton Community where he resided for 63 years. He planted acres of peas, butterbeans, watermelon and cantaloupe. Ralph and Georgia introduced Allendale County to greenhouse tomatoes and Grainger’s Greenery. Ralph had the gift of gab and never met a stranger.
He loved Horses, mules and cattle, but no animal was homeless on his farm. Ralph also enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping.
He is survived by his daughter, Lena (Tony) Higgenbottom of Barnwell; one grandson, William (Amanda) Higgenbottom of Allendale; a brother, Charles Morgan (Kuniyo) of Huger, SC. and a number of nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a baby sister and brother G.L. Grainger.
