Myrtle Lancaster Quattlebaum, 91, of Blackville, SC, passed away on December 21, 2023 following a lengthy illness, Myrtle, one of seven children, was born on April 28, 1932 to Lenward and Iola Young. As a young child, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, James Lee and Hettie Lancaster. Myrtle graduated from Blackville High School. She married Hugh Willis Quattlebaum on September 2, 1950. They went on to have three children: Bill, Marla and Harry.
Myrtle was employed by Blackville First Baptist and the Barnwell County Vocational School, but spent most of her working years as the business manager for the Denmark-Olar School District. She was a past president of The South Carolina Association of School Business Officials and was a trustee for the South Carolina School Boards Worker’s Compensation Fund.
She was a woman of deep faith and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Blackville, where she served as a deacon, sang in the choir and taught The Seekers Sunday School Class.
Myrtle’s favorite hobbies included spending time with family and friends, traveling, genealogy and archaeology. One of her favorite places was the beach. She was instrumental in establishing the Blackville Museum. Her feline companions were dear to her. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She cared deeply for the people around her, and will be remembered for all of the lives that she touched.
Myrtle was predeceased by her parents Lenward and Iola Young, James Lee and Hettie Lancaster, and her husband, Hugh. She and Hugh passed away on the same day, forty-nine years apart.
She is survived by her children, Bill (Sylvia) Quattlebaum, Marla (Randy) Jameson, Harry Quattlebaum; grandchildren, Sherri (Paul) Evans, Lea (Wes) Martin, Grace (Mark) Nelson and great grandchildren, Jameson, David, Lilly, Sophie and Rhys.
A memorial service for Myrtle will be held at Blackville First Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 12 o’clock noon with the Reverend Ken Frederick and Dr. Thomas Terry Officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blackville First Baptist Church P.O.
