Mary Frances Hutson Long, 84, wife of Eugene Briand Long passed away Saturday February 14, 2026 at HCA Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. Originally from Denmark, SC, she was a resident of Atlantic Beach, FL.
Born on February 6, 1942 she was the daughter of the late Mary Lavenia Johnston Hutson and Grover Dewey Hutson. Mary married Eugene Long in 1964 and proceeded to move all over the USA following Eugene’s US Naval career. They traveled coast to coast more than once, lived on both coasts north to south and visited almost every state in the union while raising their two sons. Eventually they settled in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Mary was a devout Free Will Baptist and firm believer in God. That faith saw her safely through a long and momentous life.
When the boys were grown Mary and Eugene continued their travels internationally. Mary struggled to order off of menus in foreign languages and sometimes ended up with plates of food that didn’t align with her culinary tastes. Eugene’s advice was just order the chicken, chicken is safe.
Mary loved music, particularly classical and divine music and played piano and organ in many of the churches they attended. She always had a piano in the house and pursued a career as an elementary music teacher.
She was a hard worker. When things needed doing, she did them. She was up first and was frequently the last person standing. You could try and keep up with her, but you probably couldn’t. Just do what she tells you to do and it’ll be ok.
Mary was a fearless, passionate advocate for her family and herself. Woe to anyone that she felt didn’t treat them right. We recall many situations where Mary confronted situations and behavior that she felt was unfair. She may not have always achieved satisfaction but you always knew what she thought about the situation.
Mary was a gifted talker, and enjoyed conversation and learning about others. Talk to her long enough and you might just find out you are related. Don’t laugh, it’s happened more than once.
She is survived by her devoted husband Eugene B Long of Atlantic Beach, FL and her sons Christopher E Long of Atlantic Beach, FL and Michael R Long of Huntersville, NC and her Granddaughter Laurel R Long of Huntersville, NC.
Mary’s good humor, bright smile and laughter will be greatly missed.
A Graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the Blackville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston, SC.
