Obituary

Funeral services for Mary Jean Hallman, 82, of Springfield, SC will be held at three o’clock p.m., Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Springfield, SC with the Reverend Timmy Barr officiating; burial will follow in the Springfield Cemetery.  Honored to serve as pallbearers are Kent Barr, Ricky Barr, Rodney Barr, Marion Brown, Landon Hallman and Robert Hallman.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be given to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, c/o Missions Fund, 150 Hi Cotton Lane, Springfield, SC 29146. Mary Jean passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023.

Born in Richland County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Arnold and Elise Hall Arnold and was married for 51 years to the late Franklin D. “Frank” Hallman. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU, the Senior Sunday School Class, taught Sunday School and was the assistant pianist. She retired as secretary from the Orangeburg School District 4 after many years. Mary Jean was a Christian lady, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great, grandmother.  She loved all of her family and friends and especially her church. Mary Jean enjoyed cooking, tending to her flowers, taking care of her yard and for relaxation she enjoyed working puzzles, as well as, crossword and word search.

Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia (Billy) Huff of Branchville, SC, Robin Steele of Orangeburg, SC and Phyllis (Mark) Chavis of Reevesville, SC; grandchildren, William D. (Kali) Huff and Steven Steele; great grandson, Bodie Reed Huff; sister, Betty Ulmer of Orangeburg, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Frank Hallman, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Eddie and Joe Gue; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Peggy Arnold; brother-in-law, Johnny Ulmer, a niece, Shannon Ulmer and a son-in-law, Jack Steele.
