A Graveside Funeral Service for Louis James “Louie” O’Gorman, 83, of Blackville, SC will be held 11 o’clock a.m., Monday, January 25, 2021 at the Blackville Cemetery with Father Gregory Wilson officiating. The family has asked that in Lieu of flowers memorials be made to Belmont Abbey https://belmontabbey.org/support-us/#. Mr. O’Gorman passed away on Saturday, January, 23, 2021.
Born in Barnwell County, SC he was a son of the late John Farrell O’Gorman, Sr. and Genevieve Shaw O’Gorman and was married to Gail Hiers O’Gorman. Louie was a graduate of Blackville High School, received his bachelors from Belmont Abbey College and later obtained a Master’s in education from Western Carolina University. In 1959 he founded the Louie O’Gorman sports camps that was held throughout the state of SC and Clonmel, Ireland. Mr. O’Gorman was a teacher, coach and administrator and retired from education after many years. Mr. O’Gorman taught in public schools and at the collegiate level. He was a former Headmaster for JDA and Andrew Jackson, served as Vice President of Student Affairs at St. Leo College in St. Leo, Florida and was once the men’s head basketball coach at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC. He received a Life Saver commendation from the Woodman of the World Life Insurance Society and in 2000 was recognized by the South Carolina Senate for his Dedication to Teaching and Coaching. Mr. O’Gorman joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aiken, SC after the closing of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Blackville, SC where he was very active in many ways including Lector and caretaker of the building and grounds.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Gail Hiers O’Gorman of the home; a daughter, Maureen O’Gorman (Matthew) Petkewich of Columbia, SC; his sons, Kevin Louis (Elizabeth) O’Gorman of Edgefield, SC and Farrell Wendell (Natasha) O’Gorman of Belmont, NC; grandchildren, Madeline Petkewich, Elizabeth Petkewich, Kellsey (Zachary) Grimes, Olivia O’Gorman, Gillian O’Gorman, Anna Clare O’Gorman and Jack O’Gorman; a sister, Joan (Bernard) Malone of Columbia, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Kathleen Reynolds and his two brothers, John “Jack” Farrell O’Gorman, Jr. and Thomas Joseph O’Gorman.
