John Allen Porter of Williston died on January 28, at the age of 94. A Graveside Service will be held at eleven o’clock a.m., Saturday, February 7, 2026 at the Williston Cemetery with the Reverend Joseph Sanders officiating.
A native of Williston, John was the son of the late John Vastine Porter and the late Ella Mae Salley Porter. He graduated from the Williston-Elko High school and attended Clemson University where he graduated with Highest Honor, receiving a BS degree in chemistry. He subsequently earned a PhD in chemistry from Vanderbilt University. After graduation he was employed for more than 32 years by Dupont and Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site as a research chemist and manager. He served a tour of duty as a First Lieutenant in the US Army Ordnance Corps. After retiring from the Savannah River Site, John consulted with the Department of Energy.
John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Williston, where he served at various times as Sunday school teacher, trustee, and deacon. He and his wife traveled widely, but most of all they enjoyed vacationing with family at Edisto Beach.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty Bolen Porter. Survivors include his son Mark A. Porter and wife Lisa of Summerville, SC; daughter Laura P. Siddons of Columbia, SC; and grandchildren Benjamin Porter, Nathan Porter, Bailey Porter, William Siddons, and Daniel Siddons.
The family would like to say thank you to his care givers LaDrettia Harley and Linda Stockman.
