Joe Williams Obituary

A Celebration of Life Service for Joe Wallace Williams, 73, of Barnwell, SC, will be held Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Living Waters Fellowship in Barnwell, with the Pastor Larry Hutto officiating. The family will host a time of fellowship following the service for those in attendance.

Joe passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous journey with dementia. Born on May 28, 1952, in Aiken, SC, Joe was the middle of three boys and the son of the late Frederick Howard Williams, Sr. and Betty Bodie Quick. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Robert “Tommy” Williams and Frederick Howard “Fred” Williams, Jr.

Joe was married to his high school sweetheart, Sandra Wright Williams, for 53 years — a love story that began at Williston High School, where Joe proudly wore #33 as a Blue Devil running back and Sandra cheered him on from the sideline. A multi-sport athlete who made the All-Region team his senior year in football. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and service to others. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Joe’s greatest joy was his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra; his son, Justin (Haley) Williams and their son, James Theodore “Theo” Williams, of Columbia, SC; his daughters, Keri (Brian) Owens and their children Madison Elizabeth (Josh) Hurt and Maddox Heath Owens, of Louisville, KY; Shannon (Todd) Phelps and their children Skylar Marie Phelps and Gavin Williams Phelps, of San Diego, CA; and Bethany (Cole) Smith and their children Anna Grace (Zak) Tallent and Irelyn Rose Smith, of North Augusta, SC. He is also survived by his cherished great-grandson, Griffin Oliver Tallent, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Joe retired after 23 years with the Savannah River Site as a production operator, where he was admired for his strong work ethic, easygoing nature, willingness to help anyone in need, and his legendary breakfast skills. Known as the man who could fix anything, he was “the guy you called” — whether something was broken or you just needed a good laugh. He never met a stranger and lived out his servant’s heart in every part of his life.

Joe was known for his quick wit and fun-loving personality. A natural jokester, he loved to make people laugh — whether it was teasing a friend, cutting up at family gatherings, or lightening the mood just when it was needed most. His sense of humor was one of his greatest gifts, reminding everyone around him not to take life too seriously and to find joy in the moment. His laughter filled rooms, and his playful spirit made everyone feel like family.

Outside of work and church, Joe’s life was full of family, laughter, and time outdoors. He loved coaching, fishing, hunting, working on classic cars, and weekends at the flea market, where conversation came as naturally as breathing. He was a man who loved being around his family & people — telling stories, sharing a meal, or helping a neighbor.

Joe also enjoyed photography. He often would carry a camera capturing moments at ballgames, church events, family gatherings, and vacations. He would have the photos printed and hand them out to friends and family, making sure everyone had a tangible memory to hold onto.

Above all else, Joe was a man of faith. He loved Jesus Christ and lived his life as a reflection of that love. For more than 20 years, he was an active member of Living Waters Fellowship, where he worshiped faithfully, served willingly, and built deep relationships within his church family. His quiet strength, humility, and steady kindness were a living testimony to his relationship with the Lord. Joe’s faith anchored him — through every joy, every trial, and even through the final season of his life — and it is that same faith that gives his family peace today, knowing he is fully healed and in the presence of his Savior.

Joe’s legacy is one of faith, love, laughter, and quiet strength — a man who didn’t just build things; he built relationships. He leaves behind a family and a community deeply shaped by his example and comforted by the promise of reunion in Christ.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” —
Matthew 25:23
