James “Smitty” Wilton Smith, Sr., of Aiken, SC on June 14, 2021, left this world peacefully in his sleep at the home of his son, James Jr. and his wife Ginny Smith. He was loved and cared for and happy to be with family. He was a lover of life and women. He was wise, kind and kept his sense of humor till the end. He befriended so many during this journey we call life.
Smitty was born in Frog Hollow to Horace and Josie Smith. He was one of three children, Annett Morris of Graniteville is the sole survivor. He was predeceased by his brother Lt. Cor. Allen B. Smith. He was the loving father of sons James W. Smith, Jr., his wife Ginny Smith, and Ted B. Smith both of Windsor, SC and a daughter, Patricia Smith Campbell and her husband Benjamin Campbell of Raleigh, NC. He was preceded in death by two children, Amanda Jo Smith and Andy W. Smith. He was grandfather to seven and a great grandfather to eight as well as uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Smitty graduated from Richmond Academy. He entered the Army after High School and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He retired from A. J. Kellows. He was a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, an uncle, a son, a brother, doggy Daddy (to Sam) and a good friend to so many. He loved being with his long-time girlfriend, Margaret Smith and her family.
Come one, come all to raise a glass in his memory and celebrate Smitty’s life with us at the VFW Post 5877 at 116 Midway Cir in Aiken. We will hold the celebration on Tuesday June 22nd from 4 pm till 7 pm. Feel free to bring a picture and share a story. That’s what he wanted.
