Gloria Sholin Obituary

Mrs. Gloria Hogg Trowell Sholin age 99, died Friday December 27th, at Lifecare Nursing Center, Columbia South Carolina.  A native of Barnwell South Carolina, Mrs. Sholin was the widow of William Bill Sholin, and the daughter of the late James Hayne Hogg and Margaret Swan Hogg Rouse.  She was born at Iris Hill, the family home in Barnwell on October 12, 1925.  She graduated from Barnwell High School and attended the University of South Carolina.  GoGo, as she was affectionately called by many of her family and friends, was a Southern lady of grace and beauty.  She will always be remembered for her love and appreciation of her family and friends.  She possessed boundless energy, creativity and a love of cooking and flower arranging.  Her keen sense of style and décor was displayed in her generous hospitality to family and friends through the years.

Her early adult years were spent in Estill S. C. where she was married to Gerald G “Buddy“ Trowell.  They had four children who were all raised In Lena and Estill.  Gloria was active in many aspects of life while living in Estill.  She owned and operated The Village Florist.  She was a member of the Estill Music and Book Clubs.  She was a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.  She cofounded the Estill Supper Club and was a member of the Estill Legion Auxiliary. She loved playing bridge with her Estill Friends.

Later in her life she worked as the Fiscal Director for Lowcountry Council of Governments in Yemassee, South Carolina and she and her second husband Bill resided in Sea Pines, Hilton Head, South Carolina.  She was appointed to the South Carolina Commission on Aging and served in that capacity for many years.   She received from the Governor of South Carolina the prestigious Palmetto Award for her service.   She retired from LCOG and she and Bill moved to Aiken, South Carolina. During her years living in Aiken she became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.  She continued her love for Bridge and became a member of the CSRA Duplicate Bridge Club.  She volunteered her time and creativity to the Aiken County Museum serving as a docent and was a volunteer at the Aiken County Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of the local DAR Chapter. She and Bill resided in the Houndslake Country Club community where they entertained their friends and family in true Southern style and grace.

After Bill died in 2014, Gloria moved to Columbia, South Carolina and resided at the Waterford Senior Living Community. She made many friends and participated in the many activities that were offered there.  Her lifetime love of Bridge continued until her health began to fail, and she moved in with her family.  With increasing failing health and the need for 24- hour nursing care she was placed in the Life Care Center of Columbia.

She is survived by her children Margaret Elizabeth Allen, Gerald Grey Trowell, and Gloria Swan Daniel, five grandchildren, Gerald Reese Daniel (Olivia), Andrew Grey Allen, Margaret Hayne Allen, Charles Price Douglas (Samantha) and Elizabeth Easterling Allen (Parker) and six great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a daughter Rebecca Hayne Douglas, and her brother James Hayne Hogg. Thank you to the staff at Life Care Center of Columbia and Crescent Hospice, who took great care of our mother while she was there.  Special thanks to her only surviving first cousin Jane Burnett and her husband Paul, who showed our mother much love and generosity. Thank you also to special friends Christine and Steve Gasparini who too showed our mother much love and generosity,
