George William Johnson

February 12, 1948 - August 14, 2020

Blue water sailor, Navy veteran, lifelong Catholic, bachelor, native South Carolinian born Columbia, SC on February 12, 1948 to Evans H. Johnson, Sr. [father] Cecelia Marie Johnson [mother]. Academic, athletic, musically gifted. Twice (2) selected Columbia, SC football player of week, honorable mention SC all-state football team. A 1966 graduate Dreher High School, attended University of South Carolina 1966-1967 prior to joining the United States Navy. Was Pan American games marathon participant fueling his running passion. I’ll miss the times, George, at Disney World slipping away from family much like the time we ran away from home with our bike. Leading you on adventure to the Magic Kingdom, always ending up at “It’s Small World”, there to enjoy the slow boat ride passing country to country as you regaled me with adventure stories of countries you had visited or trouble times in a faraway land I never had seen or heard you mention. George, your adventures covered wide array of life experiences. Your blue water escape, onto an untethered floating sea buoy, from a preying Tiger shark you watched circling upward from sea depths. The breaching of a torpedo flying over your head from the fantail of a target towing craft. Travel tales through Spain, Italy on BMW motorcycle, sometimes running from POLIZIA. Living in the boroughs of New York, bars of New Orleans, Key West duty from the seaports of Baltimore, Seattle, Pascagoula, on to Spain and Italy. The lovely Greek girl who wanted you to leave Navy and join her fathers fishing fleet, or other beauties you met along the way. I’ll miss your stories of living on the edge, as seen through eyes of a man who later said, “I lived an saw the arm pit of the world and America”. Dear brother, later in life when others were quick to judge you and give up on you, Gayle and I, our families never did. We will truly miss you George and we are proud to call you brother, Uncle, King George, and “The Rainman.” Our families extend a special thank you for the professional care and support extended George by: The loving staff of Rice Estate Arbor Center, Columbia SC
