George Fickling, Jr. Obituary

George K. Fickling, Jr., husband of Debra Daniels Fickling passed away on December 5, 2023.

He was born in Blackville, SC on December 8, 1941.  He was the son of the late George K. Fickling, Sr. and Hazel Storne Fickling.

George graduated from Blackville High School and attended the University of South Carolina.  He enjoyed a successful sales and marketing career in management with a major power tool manufacturer, living in South Carolina, Missouri, and Ohio, from which he retired in 1987 and moved back home to Barnwell County.  After owning and operating Old South Building Supplies for several years in Williston, SC, he was appointed to the position of Barnwell County Clerk of Court in June 1992.  He was then elected to that office in November 1992 and re-elected unopposed for three additional terms, serving until his retirement on December 31, 2008.  George was active in the Republican Party and several civic and service organizations.  He was co-founder and charter president of the South Carolina Association of Countywide Elected Executives (SCACEE), member of the SC Association of Clerks of Court and Registers, past president of the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Save Chem-Nuclear Committee, and Blackville-Hilda School Board Trustee.  George was a Third Degree Mason, Thirty-Second Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a Shriner.  He was a member of Double Pond Baptist Church. Over the years, he served as a deacon, brotherhood director, and on numerous church committees.  George was a proud veteran of the US Army and a Patriotic American who loved his country.

Funeral services, with Masonic Rites and Military Rites, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Double Pond Baptist Church, with interment at Blackville Cemetery, with Dr. William (Andy) Sandifer, Dr. Thomas Terry and Rev. Donnie Delk officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be made to Double Pond Baptist Church, 357 Double Pond Road, Blackville, SC 29817, Blackville Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 365, Blackville, SC 29817.

Honored to serve as Pallbearers are Barry & Mark Beasley, Gene & Jim Fickling, Ken Daniels, Roger Cromer, and John Neel Griffin.

Honorary Pallbearers are his Long-time fishing buddy, Dick Sprawls; Tuesday Night Supper Club members; Members of South Carolina Association of Countywide Elected Executives (SCACEE), and Classmates, Blackville High School Class of 1960.

George is survived by his wife, Debra (Debbie) Daniels Fickling of the home; daughters Susan Fickling Sheehan (Bill) of Mandeville, LA, Stacy Fickling Glover (Todd) of Carmel, IN. step-daughters Susan Best Anderson (Robbie) of Belmont, NC, and Sara Spence Williams (Joe) of Charlotte, NC;  nine grandchildren, Delaney (Michael) Booth, McKenna, and Trace Sheehan; Greer, Rowan, and Hollis Glover; Reece Anderson and Spencer and Chloe Mae Williams; three sisters, Julie F. Jowers of Eureka, MO, Mildred F. Pitts (Gary), and Jeannine F. Coker (Greg) both of Foley/Gulf Shores, AL, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Patricia F. Partain and Macie F. Beasley and brothers-in-law Glenn Partain, Frampton Beasley and Lowell Jowers.
