Donald Borders Obituary

Donald “Don” Joseph Borders (87) entered into his rest December 28, 2023 in Aiken, South Carolina. He was born October 1, 1936 to Joseph Virgil Borders and Emma Louise Menges Borders in Louisville, Kentucky. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Lynne McFerran Borders, whom he loved deeply. He also loved his children, Karen Borders Najvar (Bud) of Houston, TX and Michael Neal Borders (Tracy) of Aiken, SC. He had six grandchildren: Hayley Najvar Aikey (David) of Houston, TX; Katie Najvar of Houston, TX; Michael Craig Borders (Jennifer) of Fort Worth, TX; Ryan Neal Borders (Sarah) of Augusta, GA; Natalie Michele Borders of Greenville, SC; and Jacob Donald Borders (Savanah) and great grandson, Levi Taylor Borders, of Rock Hill, SC.  He is also survived by his sisters, Thelma Borders Jordan and Joan Borders, both of Louisville KY.

A proud son of Louisville, Kentucky, Don graduated from the University of Louisville in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity and had many life-long friends from his time at U of L. After graduating, he served four years in the Marine Corps, and his service was one of his accomplishments of which he was most proud. He loved the Marines and would say he would have made a career in the Corps if it would not have taken him away from his family. Honorably discharged, Don initially started working for Reynolds Metals Company for a short period before joining the DuPont Corporation in the Construction Division. He enjoyed a DuPont career spanning 32 years with multiple moves throughout the United States and one assignment in Europe. Don and Lynne acquired many friends during his time with DuPont, whom they kept in touch with throughout the years. Don retired from DuPont in 1994 as an Executive in the Engineering and Construction Department, returning to his beloved Louisville. He and Lynne lived in Louisville until recently when they came to Aiken, South Carolina to be near family.

Don loved the game of golf and loved woodworking. He was quick witted and full of quips, which his grandchildren were fond of repeating. An example of his witty quips was, “You can marry more money in five minutes than you can make in a lifetime.” Each Christmas he would watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” with his grandchildren and it was a tradition that will always be dear to their hearts. Family members enjoy fond memories of golfing together and gifts of his woodworking. Those gifts will provide long term loving memories of their dad and grandfather.

Don will be laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Memorials can be sent to Toys for Tots in lieu of flowers. A private gathering of friends and family will be scheduled in Louisville for a later date.
