James Bruce Mead, 78, of Long Branch, SC passed away at home on Saturday, February 28, 2026 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at eleven o’clock a.m., Thursday, March 5, 2026 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston, SC with the Reverend Jeremy Creech officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery by the airport. The family will receive friends from six to seven-thirty p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home in Williston, SC.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Chad Mead, Jax Mead, Bruce Mead, Gary Kinsey, Rodney Matthews and Gerald Mintz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in Bruce’s memory to the Elko Baptist Church Children’s Ministry, P.O. Box 277, Elko, SC 29826.
Born in Columbia, SC, to the late John Davis and Faye Hoover, he was raised by his parents, James Hardy Mead and Lois Greene Mead. He was a member of Elko Baptist Church and retired from the Maintenance Department at Savannah River Site. Bruce loved racing cars, shopping at thrift shops and yard sales. He could always “piddle” around and find something to do for someone. He loved entertaining people and always enjoyed a good fish fry or grilling steaks. Outdoors is where Bruce would spend time fishing and deer hunting. He also loved spending time in the mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Bates Mead of the home; his children, Lynn Mead Hensel of Conover, NC, Anthony Bruce “Tony” (Katherine) Mead of St. Helena Island, SC and Chad (Stephanie) Mead of Long Branch, SC; his grandchildren, Anthony “Bruce” (Tiffani) Mead, Jr., Summer (Ronnie) Palmer, Payslee Mead, Jax Mead, and River Mead; great grandchildren Anders and Reece Mead, Violet, Scarlet and Greyson Palmer; his brothers, Chuck (Althea) Davis of Lexington, SC and Mike (Michelle) Davis of Gilbert, SC; two sisters-in-law, Peggy (Jimmy) Bodiford of Long Branch, SC and Pamela Fields of Lexington, SC and his Tansi friends, especially his dear friend, Pearlene Thompson along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Phillips and a brother, Brian Davis.
