Alice Sanders Gunnels, 83, of Blackville, SC passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 o’clock p.m., Monday, April 28, 2025 at Folk Funeral Home, Williston, SC. Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock p.m., in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Timmy Gunnells and Milton Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery by the airport. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Dusty Carroll, Josh Carroll, Trey Chavis, Caden Collins, LeGrande Collins, Gabe Gunnells, Hunter Gunnells and Blake Owens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Folk Funeral Home, P.O. Box 367, Williston, SC 29853.
Born in Barnwell County, SC she was a daughter of the late Darris Sanders and Irene Ray Sanders and was married to the late Francis L. "Frank" Gunnells. She was a member of Georges Creek Baptist Church and attended Green Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church. For a few years, she worked with the teamsters at SRS and Bechtel. She loved flowers, gardening and working in her yard. She also enjoyed quilting and shopping. Her faith was very important to her as she loved her church and was a God-loving woman.
Survivors include her daughters, Gale (Terry) Collins of Elko, SC and Betsy (Frank) Chavis, Jr. of Blackville, SC; a son, Larry Lavern Gunnells of Blackville, SC; sisters, Priscilla Sanders (Barry Creech) of Blackville and Grace Wilson of Hilda, SC; a sister-in-law, Shirley Sanders; grandchildren, LeGrande Collins, Larry Gunnells, Jr., Hunter (Kendra) Gunnells, Trey (Rebecca) Chavis, III; Alyson Taylor “Nookie” (Blake) Owens and 13 great grandchildren along with a number of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, M. B. (Joanne) Sanders and Clifford Sanders and a brother-in-law, Harvey Wilson.
